Application Criteria & Procedures

NIRSA Region I offer support scholarships to our Regional membership on an annual basis. Regional Contingency funds and our sponsorship from AASG Sports Surfacing, Full Circle Padding, and New England Fitness Distributors are allocated to assist NIRSA Region I student members to attend the NIRSA National or Regional Conference, symposiums, workshops or clinics. Applications will be distributed at the annual Region I Conference and sent to all Region I Institutional Members for distribution to potential candidates. Scholarship Awards are not guaranteed to be offered annually.

Minimum Qualifications for Student Applicants

  • Students Applicants must be a current Student Member of NIRSA at the time and awarding of scholarship.
  • Student Applicants may either be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student or within 6 months from their date of graduation from a NIRSA Member Institution within Region I.
  • At the time of application, Student Applicants are required to have a minimum cumulative GPA.
    1. Undergraduate Student Applicants – 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (3.75 on a 5.0 scale)
    2. Graduate Student Applicants – 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (4.0 on a 5.0 scale)
    3. GPAs will be verified by either the institutions professional staff who can obtain that record or an official transcript will need to be submitted by the applicant.
  • Student Applicants are required to be employed within a collegiate recreation program or department. Student applicants not employed within a collegiate recreation program or department must be majoring in a recreation, sports management, higher education or related degree program.
  • Student Applicants must intend to pursue a graduate assistantship or full-time position in collegiate recreation or higher education.
  • Student Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a collegiate recreation professional or professor of recreation, sports management, higher education or related academic program.
  • Student Applicants must submit a resume and answer the 3 essay questions on this application.
  • Student Applicants must complete the attached application.

Scholarship Committee

  • The Region I Scholarship Committee is comprised of 4 Professional Members within Region I.
  • The Region I Scholarship Committee is appointed by the Regional Representative from a pool of committee volunteers. One committee member will be appointed chairperson.
  • The Region I Scholarship Committee will serve for 1 calendar year with 1 member remaining for the upcoming year who will then serve as the committee chair.

Scholarship Awards:

  • The Region I Scholarship will be comprised of two award cycles.
  • The first cycle will be awarded in the January for assistance in attendance in Spring NIRSA Sponsored events such as the NIRSA National Conference.
  • The second cycle will be awarded in September for attendance in Fall NIRSA Sponsored event such as the NIRSA Region I Conference.
  • The total award amount will not exceed $5,000/year and will be dependent on the recommendation and allocation by the Region I Contingency Fund Committee.
    • Awards for the NIRSA Annual Conference will be $500/recipient with total awards not exceeding $4,000/year.
    • Awards for the NIRSA Region I Conference will be $250/recipient with total minimum of $1,000/year.
    • If the total award amount allocated for the NIRSA National Conference is not met, the difference of the awarded amount from allocated amount may be applied for awards to the NIRSA National Region I Conference.
  • Applicants are also eligible for the Region I Scholarship if awarded a NIRSA Foundation Scholarship and may apply for both.
  • Consideration will be given to all applicants; particularly those that have not received previously received a Region I Scholarship.

  • Spring Award Cycle
    • Publication of Award/Application: November 1, 2016
    • Application Deadline: December 9, 2016
    • Review of Applications by Committee: Week of December 12, 2016
    • Decision of Awards: December 15, 2016
    • Announcement of Awards:  December 16, 2016

  • Active professional member of NIRSA.
  • Region I member for a minimum of two years.
  • Consideration will be given to all applicants and particularly to professionals with 5 years of experience, or less.
  • Presently employed in a collegiate recreation setting or employed within 6 months of the time of application and residing in a Region I state.
  • Demonstrated service to Region I by presenting at conferences, serving on committees, and participating in development of student members.
  • Professional applicants must submit the following:
    • Resume and Cover Letter
    • Letter of recommendation from a NIRSA professional member at your institution.

Scholarship Committee:
